Department of Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Counseling Professions
Psychiatric rehabilitation is a mental health care specialty focused on helping individuals diagnosed with serious mental illnesses live meaningful and productive lives in their communities. We are a leader in psychiatric rehabilitation education, having pioneered some of the first degree-granting psychiatric rehabilitation programs in the nation. Our faculty also authored the first comprehensive introductory textbook in the field
Through intensive coursework, clinical field experience and research, our graduate and undergraduate students gain the knowledge and skills needed to provide evidence-based psychiatric rehabilitation interventions and clinical mental health counseling. We also prepare occupational therapy assistants. Our Ph.D. students are prepared to conduct original research and to become future educators.
Our CACREP Accredited M.S. Program in Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling Track is among the top-ranked master’s degree rehabilitation counseling programs regionally and nationally. Our graduates have achieved an 87% pass rate on the National Counselors Exam. Graduates of our B.S. programs in Psychiatric Rehabilitation have received a 100% pass rate on the Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner (CPRP) national credentialing exam.
