Methodology & Statistics Support Team

Research and scholarship support for the School of Health Professions faculty

What is the SHP Methodology and Statistics Support Team?

The SHP Methodology and Statistics Support Team (MSST) is part of the SHP Office of Research. Our purpose is to help SHP faculty plan, develop, and carry out research. We also provide support to “get the word out” (i.e., scholarly publications, professional presentations).

If it involves turning your great idea into a scholarly publication we can either help you or hook you up with someone who can (e.g., Office of Faculty Development or SHP grant support resources).

Explore our Scholarship Collaboratories

While MSST supports individual faculty scholarship projects, the heart of scholarship at SHP occurs within our Scholarship Collaboratories. These are topically focused virtual labs where faculty across the school.

  • Develop and refine research project ideas
  • Work with team-science collaborators interested in similar topics
  • Receive peer-mentoring and peer input on their research and scholarship
  • Access methodological and analytical support from members of the MSST team

Find out more information on the different Scholarship Collaboratories and find out where you might fit in.

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL)

Focus: Members of this lab are passionate about teaching and learning—both in general and as it applies to their own courses. This lab seeks to extend our understanding of what makes for effective, theory driven and evidence-based health care instruction.

Example Projects:

  • AI in Education: exploring how artificial intelligence can be harnessed to enhance graduate healthcare education and clinical practice
  • Student Wellness: understanding the role that student wellness plays in student success

Contacts: Joy Jia (yj340@shp.rutgers.edu), Matthew Wright (wrightmj@shp.rutgers.edu)

Health Disparities

Focus: The Health Disparities Scholarship Collaboratory at SHP comprises interdisciplinary faculty members advancing equity-centered, patient- and community-informed research that addresses structural barriers, chronic disease burden, communication access, and wellness across diverse populations.

Example Projects:

  • Social, structural, and cultural drivers of disparities across disease states.
  • Participatory, qualitative, mixed-methods, and community-engaged approaches to foster practical interventions.

Contact: Pamela Rothpletz-Puglia (rothplpm@shp.rutgers.edu)

Clinical Practice

Focus: Members of this lab are focused on enhancing both student learning and patient care within the context of SHP’s free clinic system. Although the primary work of the lab is currently to build out EHR and data collection and tracking capabilities, lab members are planning for a wide range of evaluation projects that focus on patient health and student learning outcomes.

Example Projects:

  • Enhancing patient care via free clinics
  • Clinically situated service learning

Contact: Andrew Lynch (al1282@shp.rutgers.edu), Frank Giannelli (giannefr@shp.rutgers.edu)

Interprofessional Education and Practice

Focus: The IPE/IPP lab is committed to designing and evaluating interprofessional simulations and events. Members of the lab work with faculty across Rutgers University to ensure that all interprofessional activities meet the highest standards or educational and evaluation rigor.

Example Projects:

  • Interprofessional Education Simulation
  • IPE Facilitator Effectiveness
