Applying to the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program

 

The deadline for application to the Professional Program for Spring 2018 part-time enrollment is November 1, 2017.

APPLICATION SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS:
Complete online or paper application and pay the $75.00 application fee.) Applicants must send all materials including OFFICIAL transcipts from all colleges or universities, two letters of recommendation, one from OT/OTA who supervised occupational therapy observation, one from college advisor or another professional, (professor, employer etc.), and personal essay describing OT as career choice, reflecting on volunteer work, community service, and pre professional coursework, and documentation of 20 hours of observation with an OT or OTA on facility letterhead to:

The Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) Program is offered within the School of Health Professions at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in collaboration with the New Jersey Colleges listed below (updated April 2017).

  • Camden County College
  • County College of Morris
  • Cumberland County College
  • Hudson County Community College
  • Mercer County Community College
  • Ocean County College
  • Passaic County Community College
  • Raritan Valley Community College
  • Salem Community College
  • Sussex County Community College
  • Warren County Community College
  • Thomas Edison State Universtiy

The AS degree in Occupational Therapy Assistant includes 32 prerequisite foundational credits (pre-professional phase of the OTA curriculum at a Partner College) and 42 professional credits earned at the School of Health Professions of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey's Scotch Plains Campus.

Individuals interested in the program should first contact a Partner College from the list above.
Contact information for each Partner College is available under the link "Partner Colleges".

*Individuals who have completed at minimum 26 of the 32 pre-professional credits may apply directly to Rutgers OTA Program for the full-time program and those who have completed at minimum 23 of the 32 pre-professional credits may apply directly to Rutgers OTA Program for part-time enrollment. These applicants must have completed Anatomy and Physiology I and II, and Developmental Psychology within the past five years.  Anatomy and Physiology I and II must be completed at the same college or university to ensure all material is covered in a comprehensive and sequential manner.  If accepted into the professional program at Rutgers, these individuals will be connected to Thomas Edison State College (TESC) where they will complete 6-9 credits of coursework on-line and secure TESC as their partner program. 

Individuals who have completed some of the pre-requisite courses may be able to transfer these credits to one of the Partner Colleges. Each Partner establishes its own policy regarding transfer credits and residency requirements at their institution

Applicants to the full-time program (fall start) must provide documentation of enrollment in all remaining courses to ensure this coursework is complete prior to the start of fall classes at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.  Applicants may request permission to take two of these courses concurrent with the professional curriculum:

    • Introduction to Sociology
    • Ethics or Philosophy
    • Diversity Studies

Applicants to the part-time program (winter/spring start) must provide documentation of enrollment in all remaining courses to ensure this coursework is complete prior to the start of winter/spring classes at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.  Applicants may request permission to take these courses concurrent with the professional curriculum:

    • Introduction to Sociology
    • Ethics or Philosophy
    • Diversity Studies
