Emmaleigh Hauck
Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program, Class of 2023
Despite the roadblocks throughout her academic journey, Emmaleigh Hauck thrived at the School of Health Professions. “Rutgers is the only university in New Jersey that offers a degree program in rehabilitation counseling and the clinical mental health counseling track,” said Hauck. “It was a perfect fit for me.”
Prior to Hauck becoming a M.S. in Rehabilitation Counseling student at Rutgers School of Health Professions (SHP), she completed her undergraduate degree in health sciences at Rider University. Hauck was originally interested in pre-med; however, after working at an assisted living home she realized there was a lack in mental health advocacy in health care. She wanted to change that.
While at SHP Hauck had many positive experiences solidifying her career choice. SHP’s clinical coordinator facilitated Hauck’s full-time internship at a counseling and mental health care provider for adults, children and families. “I worked with children who need advocacy with schools, legal systems and more,” said Hauck. “So much work is needed to support them through difficult times. The experience was amazing. It was incredibly eye opening and helped me discover new avenues within my career.”
Hauck’s academic journey has been marred with health issues. “I have an invisible disability that makes it painful to even get out of bed. I struggled a lot with it during my masters,” says Hauck. Her health issues have forced Emmaleigh to dig to find the motivation to pursue her career. In fact, she will be pursuing mental health law at Rutgers Law School in the fall. “I initially wanted to help through talk therapy, but realized I can help far more people by changing the systems around them for the better.”
Hauck’s future shines bright. Equipped with her M.S. in Rehabilitation Counseling and an unwavering determination, Hauck is ready to tackle law school and make a difference. The passion she holds for mental health care advocacy makes Emmaleigh unstoppable.
