Purpose
This policy specifies the method for determining grade point average at SHP.
Accountability
Under the direction of the Dean and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the SHP Registrar shall have responsibility for this policy.
Policy
The method of determining grade point average for SHP is as follows: Each course’s semester credit
hours is multiplied with:
“A” grade by 4.0;
“A-” grade by 3.7;
“B+” grade by 3.3;
“B” grade by 3.0;
“B-” grade by 2.7;
“C+” grade by 2.3;
“C” grade by 2.0;
“C-” grade by 1.7;
“D” grade by 1.0; and
“F” grade by 0.0.
The total number of quality points divided by total of semester hour credits completed constitutes the grade point average.
Example:
A student received the following grades:

| “C+” in Communication Skills | (3 credits) | |
| “B” in Clinical Procedures | (3 credits) | |
| “B+” in Clinical Assisting I | (3 credits) | |
| “A” in Ethics | (3 credits) |
Quality points for each grade received would be multiplied by the number of credits for each course, e.g.
| D = 1.0 points X 3 credits | = 3.0 | |
| C = 2.0 points X 3 credits | = 6.0 | |
| C+ = 2.3 points X 3 credits | = 6.9 | |
| B = 3.0 points X 3 credits | = 9.0 | |
| A = 4.0 points X 3 credits | = 12.0 |
Total quality points is determined by adding up the individual points (3+6+6.9+9+12) = 36.9
This number is then divided by the total number of credits carried for the semester, which is 15 (5 X 3).
The grade point average is 36.9 divided by 15 or 2.46.
An example of a minus grade calculation is provided here:

| B- = 2.7 points x 3 credits | = 8.1 | |
| A = 4.0 points X 3 credits | = 12.0 |
Total quality points is determined by adding up the individual points (3+6+6.9+9+8.1+12) = 45.0
This number is then divided by the total number of credits carried for the semester, which is 18 (6×3)
The grade point average is 45 divided by 18 or 2.5.
A grade of “P” is not calculated into the grade point average.
Repetition of any course results in both the lower grade and the new grade appearing on the transcript; however, the quality points from the lower grade are not calculated into the student’s cumulative grade point average (Reference: Repetition of Course Policy, # 3.5.1).
This policy may vary for joint program students who registered through a partner school.
