Healthspan Applications for Rehabilitation Providers:
The Facts on Sleep, Physical Activity, Nutrition, Social Connection, and More!

Course Description
Why do some individuals appear to age more slowly, live longer, or remain active well into later life, while others do not? Is this simply a matter of chance, or the result of “good genes”? Research on aging continues to explore the balance between nature (genetics) and nurture (lifestyle). Increasingly, this inquiry has expanded to include healthspan – the length of time an individual can live free from illness or disability.
Health care typically “turns on” when people endure an injury or illness. In contrast, rehabilitation professionals are uniquely positioned to promote wellness, prevent disease and injury, and enhance healthspan through conservative, proactive interventions across the lifespan.
This course equips rehabilitation professionals with a deeper understanding of the physiology of aging, challenging common assumptions about what is often attributed to the “normal aging process.” Participants will gain practical, evidence-informed strategies that can be applied to both clients and themselves to positively influence healthspan across five key categories: physical activity, sleep, nutrition, social connection, and the health benefits of extreme experience.
Learning Objectives
Following this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Identify physical activities that optimize safety and wellness
- Identify nutritional strategies designed for longevity and function
- Identify the science of social support and purposefulness
- Identify wellness opportunities through a balance of rest and challenge
- Identify controlled extreme conditions in the form of temperature, exertion, pressure and novelty in an effort to remain capable, adaptable, and healthy
Target Audience: This intermediate to advanced level course is primarily geared towards rehabilitation professionals such as physical and occupational therapists; however, it contains valuable information for other healthcare providers as well, and all are welcome to attend.
