and Counseling Professions
The Department of Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Counseling Professions at Rutgers SHP is a leader in psychiatric rehabilitation education, having pioneered some of the first degree-granting psych rehab programs in the nation. Our faculty also authored the first comprehensive introductory textbook in the field. We offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in counseling and rehabilitation, as well as postbaccalaureate certificates. We also offer an associate’s degree program for Occupational Therapy Assistant, as well as the nation’s first Peer Support Certificate program, which doesn’t require a prior degree.
Through intensive coursework, research and clinical field experience, our students gain the confidence and skills to help people living with psychiatric disabilities overcome barriers to independent living.
Department Chair: Kenneth J. Gill, Ph.D.
Vice Chair: Nora Barrett, Ph.D.
On average, our students have achieved a 100% pass rate on the CPRP national credentialing exam.
We are dedicated to educating students who contribute to the advancement of the psychiatric rehabilitation and counseling professions.
In addition to degrees and certificates, the Department of Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Counseling Professions provides education services consultation and training, as well as community support services.
