Marianne Mortera, Ph.D.

Marianne H. Mortera, PhD, OTR/L is an Associate Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation and Movement Sciences, Occupational Therapy Program. In 1987, her clinical expertise in neurological and cognitive rehabilitation began in the Departments of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Mount Sinai Hospital and the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine at New York University Medical Center in New York City.

Her research has focused on Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom Veterans with traumatic brain injury (TBI), and the development and initial testing of the Mortera Cognitive Screening Measure and the Cognitive Screen for Grooming. Her current research includes reviews of pharmacological and yoga interventions for individuals with TBI and developing validity standards in rehabilitation research and practice.

Dr. Mortera actively serves on several task forces and work groups with the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine, and for over 35 years, Dr. Mortera has been a faculty member in entry-level through post-professional educational programs. She has developed and taught more than 45 different courses across the occupational therapy curriculum spanning professional foundations, neuroscience, kinesiology, neurorehabilitation, cognitive rehabilitation, medical conditions, clinical fieldwork education, theory, research methods, measurement, and applied scientific inquiry at New York University, Long Island University, Columbia University, A.T. Still University, Mercy College, Nova Southeastern University, SUNY Downstate, and Pacific University.

Dr. Mortera recently co-authored a neuroscience textbook for rehabilitation professional students and clinicians and has written nine book chapters and several journal articles on brain injury rehabilitation and cognitive assessment. She is also a continuing education provider in over 65 invited and peer-reviewed presentations, nationally and internationally, on neuroscience underlying occupational therapy interventions, cognitive assessment, treatment effectiveness, measurement, and study quality in brain injury rehabilitation research and practice.
