Purpose

This policy establishes the SHP policy for requesting and approving religion and religious accommodations to ensure nondiscrimination based upon religion and set guidelines for providing religious accommodations in accordance with Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended, and the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination.

Accountability

The Dean of SHP, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and appropriate Program Directors ensure compliance with this policy.

Policy

SHP students, Faculty and staff shall follow the University Policy 00-01-35-30:00, Workplace Diversity, Religion and Religious Accommodations.

Procedures

A student shall submit a request in writing to his/her Program Director (PD) by completing the University Request for Reasonable Accommodations Form located on the University’s Office of Workplace Diversity website. The request should include an explanation of the reasons for the accommodation and specify the accommodation that is requested. The PD will review the request and either grant it and inform the student it has been approved or refer the student to the Office of Workplace Diversity for review. If the student requests a private room to meditate or pray, the PD will contact appropriate administrative officials for room accommodations. If a student requests days off for religious observances, the student may be required to make up any class or clinical time lost or assignments/work missed, in accordance with program requirements.

This request should be submitted to the Program Director by the end of the student’s first full week of class at the beginning of each semester.
