HIM Program Curriculum

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

The curriculum of the BS HIM is based on the competencies and learning objectives required by the American Health Information Management Association as developed by the Council of Excellence in Education.  These competencies and learning objectives can be viewed HERE

The degree is offered as a solo degree from Rutgers or a joint degree with an affiliate.   Students may apply directly to the solo degree having completed the following general education course at a regionally accredited college or university:

Student wishing to receive a joint degree may complete all of their general education credits at one of the affiliates listed below following their general education requirements (click on school name to see course list).    This program currently has the following affiliates

 

All affiliates have a minimum number of credits required at their institution.   With the exception of Thomas Edison State University (TESU), students should apply directly to the affiliate and not to Rutgers.   After completion of the affiliate portion of the program, the student will then apply to Rutgers.  Those selecting TESU as their affiliate will apply to Rutgers SHP as we hand the application process for this one affiliate.

Already have an AA or AS or significant number of GE credits?

Applicants who already have completd an AA or an AS from an NJ community college or have completed a the majority of the courses listed above may apply directly to the HIM program at SHP.rutgers.edu /admissions.   To be elibile for admission applicants must meet GPA requirements and must have completed the pre-requisite courses. ( Click here to view required courses.) Remaining Gen Ed courses will be taken through cross registration at Rutgers.

Suggested Course Sequence of Professional Courses at Rutgers :

NOTE:  Students who take courses out of sequence, who transfer in coursework to the HIM program, or who fail to register during the early registration period may encounter a reduced courseload as the HIM Program does not offer extra classes to maintain a full time schedule.
