Professional Development in Prevocational Services

NJ Partial Care Services Standards

The Integrated Employment Institute and the Career Connection Employment Resource Institute (MHANJ) have jointly developed curriculum that meets the staff training requirement set forth in the NJ regulations for partial care settings regarding the delivery of prevocational services. Individuals working in the partial care setting should attend these sessions. The complete series comprises a total of 12 modules. There are two prerequisite sessions (F1 and F2) which must be completed before any of the other partial care sessions. For more information, please contact: Debbie Rich at debbie.rich@rutgers.edu

IEI's Web-Based Professional Development Courses - Prevocational Services

F1 – Work and Recovery

We continue our web-based initiative this semester and will be offering “Work and Recovery” (F-1) completely online. Work and Recovery is a prerequisite and must be completed before participants can attend any other sesion in the Partial Care series.

S1:  Assess and Developing Readiness
Part I - Readiness Development - Communication Skills

This first session will provide the opportunity for participants to review and practice the core communication skills necessary to facilitate collaborative dialogues with individuals with whom they work. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to practice these skills in a number of role play situations, preparing them for use of these skills in the next session where they will begin to practice conducting employment readiness assessments.

Part II - Readiness Development - PRRDP

You cannot attend Part II if you did not attend Part I

Readiness is defined as interest in and willingness to engage in a process toward the accomplishment of a goal. This session will review the purpose of readiness assessment, identify and discuss the factors associated with readiness, present the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Readiness Determination Profile (PRRDP), a semi-structured interview tool to assess readiness, provide participants the opportunity to practice using the assessment tool, and explore strategies for developing and increasing readiness related to employment goals based on PRRDP assessment results.

S2:  Recovery Planning and Employment Goals

Overview of how to identify the factors to consider before writing goals, including the concept that goals can and will change over time.  Learn to include consumers as an integral part of identifying the information that should be included in the overall recovery planning.

This workshop will look at supports from two perspectives.  First, participants will learn why family members are invaluable resources and hwo they can engage family members through the vocational process.  Second, they will learn about community resources that are available to assist people with mental illness overcome barriers to work.

S3:  Career Planning and Development

This two-part (12 hour) session will explore employment development from a career-oriented perspective in order to assist people in achieving productive job matches.  It will include approaches to facilitate the process for people who are determining their values, interests, preferences, and in increasing their knowledge of the work world.

P1:  Co-Occurring Disorders and Employment (MICA)

Explore employment for persons who experience both a mental illness and substance use disorders.  The session will identify the differences between substance abuse and dependency and discuss the impact of alcohol and drugs on psychosocial functioning.  Strategies for working with individuals with co-occurring disorders who are seeking employment will be reviewed.

 

Professional Development Courses in Career Services

PLEASE NOTE:  These sessions are not part of the Professional Development in Prevocational Services series.

The Career Service Series is made up of a total of 16 areas; 11 basic courses complimented by 5 advanced course topics to increase the skills of staff providing employment and education support to people with lived experience of mental illness. These courses are geared toward Supported Employment and Supported Education specialists, although anyone interested in assisting with career/vocational planning and development can attend.  We have designed this series to serve the needs of both new staff and existing staff.  It will also serve as a way to help programs cross train staff in both program modalities.  This will be especially helpful in counties that are not currently served by one of the four LEARN of NJ branches but have existing Supported Employment programs.

Vocational Readiness

This training will focus on developing the skills and gaining the knowledge necessary to increase a person’s readiness to make changes related to employment or education. Counseling techniques will be reviewed and information on the factors associated with readiness with be provided. Participants will have the opportunity to conduct a readiness assessment and receive feedback from the facilitator.

CS X:  Finding Success and Satisfaction:  How to Fullfill the Needs of the Job Seeker and the Employer - A. Job Development:  Activities for the Employment Specialist

Are you struggling with job development activities?  Do you not know where to begin when it comes to identifying and approaching employers?  This highly interactive workshop will explore the basics of job development----creating effective marketing materials, introducing your employment services in a businesslike manner, and contacting potential employers.  Trainees will have the opportunity to practice, practice, practice job development techniques and learn from experienced job developers  what it takes to “sell” your employment services.    Trainees should bring with them any marketing materials they have, including business cards, brochures, and fact sheets.

CS IX:  Finding Success and Satisfaction:  How to Fullfill the Needs of the Job Seeker and the Employer - A. Job Development:  Activities for the Job Seeker - B. Managing Personal Information

Teaching individuals who have been out of the workforce job seeking skills is crucial to the recovery process and long-term community integration. The focus of this training will be to provide staff members with tools and resources to assist jobseekers with conducting a self-directed search. An additional component to this training will be providing participants working with individuals with disabilities tools and resources on issues of disclosure and management of personal information.
